Red Knights Pennsylvania Chapter 2 News Articles http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/rss News articles published on redknightsmcpa2.com using RSS 2.0 Tue, 07 Feb 2012 01:22:15 GMT Chili Willie ride http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=84 On 1/1/12, my daughter, her boyfriend and I went to Margate NJ to try our first Polar Bear Plunge. With air and water temps at 50 degrees, I was actually disappointed it wasn't colder. Flash forward one week. On 1/8/12, after attending a morning swim clinic put on by Olympic coach Dick Shoulberg - to help prepare me for my next triathlon - I rode my NT700 over to Cycle Stop. The temp was in the low to mid-40's and so I was again a bit disappointed with the lack of truly cold weather for another "winter" event. Regardless, I did find Andy Powell - sans his RK vest - and a member of my now-defunct Barren Hill Bikers group. I took 2nd position behind Cycle Stop's Bob and we led the 150+ bikes on a 20-mile ride through the area including Valley Forge park and some other nice roads. We eventually arrived at Hooters in K of P and I was first in line for the chili and got a chair at a table before the place filled quickly. Andy stopped by for a short time and I had a nice conversation with another attendee who owns even more bikes than me - he's got 11 of them to my 4 - and he's been enjoying his early retirement by riding with his wife, who was strangely missing from his side. Guess she doesn't like the "cold" riding. After a while, Bob started reading the raffle ticket numbers and giving away various freebies. Engine cleaner - what the hell is THAT for? Jumper cables and digital tire guages - Bob explained that anyone who had their bike serviced at Cycle Stop would not need these, but that we'd have them to assist a non-Cycle-Stop-using friend in need. The final raffle item was a nice leather jacket. Preferring textile jackets, there was nothing I had any interest in. Overall, the weather was nice and the ride was successful. And better than the numerous postponements from last year. The chili was also quite good. For most of the participants, it was their first ride of 2012. It was my fifth. I finished 2011, having ridden 206 of 235 workdays (88%) with 17 of the remaining 29 having ridden a human-powered two-wheeler. Overall, I got 223 days of riding including weekends. Still a significant drop from 225 workdays and 277 overall I rode in 2006. Guess I'm just becoming a pussy in my old age. While the donations have shrunk a bit from better financial times, it's still an enjoyable lunchtime sidecar ride to deliver the filled stockings, board games and cash. This year, we had at least 11 people contribute to a full box of gifts. They were delivered by me, proudly wearing my Red Knights colors. SalVal personnel always remember me and thank me for our annual giving. God bless you all and have a great holiday season! Altogether 16 Red Knights and ten additional guest including member of Leather & Lace gathered at the Riddle Ale House in Media. On arrival at Temple the bikers dismounted their bikes and grabbed their gifts and gathered outside before heading into the hospital where they were met by some kids and staff. Crystal the head organizer thanked everyone for coming and explained a little about the hospital and were the gift would be going after the few children present got theirs. All guest were offered snacks offered by the hospital and were able to hang out as long as they liked. The big man himself Santa arrived a little later and the kids got a chance to sit on his lap and tell him what they wanted on Christmas day, Santa then gave the kids a gift from the motorcyclist. The Red Knights Pa 2 would like to thank our fellow Knights and other guest for helping us make the day of children at Temple Hospital a little brighter. A special thanks to Crystal and our own Ernie Derrickson, Jr for organizing this event and pulling it off in a very short time period. The Red Knights Pa 2 hope to make this a yearly event and look forward to working with Temple again in the future. The night was to celebrate the life of Janea the hall decorated in her favorite color purple, guest where given tiaras and mickey mouse ears to wear, and the room was lined on one side with memories of Janea and the other with dessert said to be Janea favorite part of every meal. A DJ was on hand for people to dance, another thing Janea loved to do. As expected the night had some serious moments as well friends and family got up and said some words and told some funny and emotional stories. People got up and sang songs that had meaning to them and Janea. The Children's Home of Reading takes in kids of all ages from broken families and teaches the kids everything they need to be ready for life in the real world. The ride started at the Birdsboro Fire Company with around 50 plus bikes including our very own R.P. Scott who got the honors of escorting Santa on the ride. After the short ride over to Reading we arrived at the Children's Home and were greeted by all the kids cheering us on as we arrived. At the home toys were unloaded and then a few short words by members of the Bros Motorcycle Club thanking everyone for the participation after that several of the Children from the home got up and also thanked everyone for coming and announced that there were snacks and beverages available that the kids prepared. Mon, 14 Nov 2011 01:11:21 GMT http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=77 Toy Run 2011 - New end point http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=76 After seeing a news story about the cancellation of this year's Toy Run, I was surprised to learn that Drexel University had stepped with a promise of volunteers to collect whatever toys the motorcyclists would care to deliver to Citizen's Bank Park (CBP). Thus, it was after I completed a morning 5K running race around the Art Museum, that I continued on to Penn's Landing to join several thousand of my closest motorcycling buddies. Temperatures rose during the late morning and was quite pleasant for the slow ride to the final destination - the parking lot outside CBP. The same basic vendors were at Penn's Landing as in years past, so it was a familiar sight for those of us who had participated in prior years. Some years the weather was bad and "only" a couple thousand bikes would show up. One particularly pleasant day with temps in the 70s, brought out tens of thousands of bikes and a like complement of toys for delivery to CHOP. This year, however, we weren't going to end up at CHOP and therefore were never ensnarled in crawling mass of humanity trying to park, drop off gifts and leave from in front of the hospital. I also recall that there had been several instances of stolen bikes at previous events. That said, it was nice to know the toys would ultimately be delivered to needy children, regardless of where the cyclists ended up. I missed having my daughter, Kristen, join us for this annual pilgrimage as she is now a collage freshman. Instead, I brought "Fred" with me. Fred is a skeleton that I had previously zip-tied to the back of my red PC800 for the Halloween holiday. Fred elicited lots of smiles from fellow riders and their passengers and didn't talk nearly as much as Kristen. :^) After parking, I walked slowly up toward the front of the event to see the familiar vendors and try to locate some fellow Red Knights. Bought a cheeseburger along the way. On the return trip, I located our chapter members and a few minutes later, had my bike parked among them. It was nice to speak to some guys I don't see but once a year and even caught up with a guy from my fire company who is a member of another Red Knights club. Soon though, we heard the rumble of bikes ahead of us and knew the ride was to begin shortly. After passing by the start point and making the left, we make another two relatively quick lefts and then a right, putting us back onto Columbus Boulevard pointed in the opposite direction from where we started. As we continued slowly along, to our left, we could see the long line of parked bikes awaiting their turn to follow us. When we came to the end of the parked bikes, I asked the rider next to me if we were just going to make a Uturn and make it a complete circle of bikes. "Yeah, and then we just go around the circle twice and head home." The "tour" continued along Columbus Boulevard and ultimately ended up at CBP perhaps 15 minutes later. A bit of stop-n-go before we had the opportunity to pull into the massive parking lot to claim our respective parking spots. Off the bikes, everyone walked to one of a number of tables staffed by volunteers, behind whom were large boxes labeled "Boy", "Girl", or "Unisex". Lacking the constriction presented by a walk through CHOP, the collection went quickly and smoothly, leaving us more time to talk and look at bikes, before heading on our respective ways home. I actually spoke with a volunteer for a bit to see if the organization collecting the gifts would be will to part with any of them for another great cause. My niece works at the Child Guidance Resource Center located in Coatesville. In past years, Toys For Tots, had provided toys to her organization, but the person in charge had since left, leaving them unsure of if they would have gifts for the 950 to 1000 underprivileged kids. I left my contact information with the volunteer in hopes that someone will contact me with a promise to provide gifts to these kids. We'll see. I arrived back home about 1:30, and still plenty of time to get some of those pesky honey-do items off the ever-growing list. I'm glad the event was able to take place and hope it will continue to do so for this important charity. Red Knights from Pennsylvania and New Jersey made an excellent showing. Tue, 08 Nov 2011 22:03:25 GMT http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=76 13th Annual Red Helmet Ride to Emmitsburg, MD http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=75 On October 15, 2011 four members and guest traveled to Emmitsburg Maryland for the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. Our first stop was the Battlefield Harley Davidson in Gettysburg Pa. for lunch and to watch the gathering of the Knights Tournament. The gathering of the Knights tournament is put on by the Red Knights, Blue Knights and Green Knights International, it is a friend competition between the three clubs for a year of bragging rights (for more info go to www.redknightsmc.com and click on gathering of the knights tournament). While at the tournament we meet our International President Dave Emery you can see him in the pictures below in a yellow vest and his bike is the one with the 3 horses and steamer. After the tournament 32 motorcycles left for the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Department in Maryland for the 13th Annual Red Helmet Ride back to Emmitsburg Maryland. There were between 250 and 300 motorcyclist that took part in this years ride. While in Walkersville we got to check out their 1940 Ford Engine see pictures below. After taking part in ceremonies at Emmitsburg that included the lying of the wreath, visiting the chapel and monument our group left for O'Rorke's Family Eatery in Gettysburg for a wonderful supper before heading home for the day. It's been quite a week or so. Gone are our gloves and gowns and dad is finally able to roam freely through the hallways. So roam isn't quite the word but he can leave his room if someone wants to push. Also gone now is the trach tube. It's been removed and seems to be healing nicely. They're continuing to work on his swallowing and now with the trach gone he's closer to eating somewhat real food again. His speech hasn't improved much but that will come with time, I hope. He's still mostly nodding his head yes and no and on occasion will give you a shoulder shrug and a tilted head. As in when asked "Are the nurses treating you well?", he might respond with a "Most of the time, but I'd rather they wouldn't mess with me. I wish I could take this glove off" More on the glove later. He has been trying to talk more but most of what's coming out is air and a just a faint bit of noise. I've noticed it when he's trying to string a few words together and he just can't make it happen. There is still the occasional word so he hasn't regressed. I haven't seen his goofy grin in a while but I've heard he's been caught laughing. If you visit, please bring your best joke, I'd love to hear what happens. No miming please, it's not funny, ever. We get it, you're stuck in a box. Say, who's that walking down the street? Is that Dad? Um, no. Not yet but he's trying. Once he was cleared to go back to the gym they've been very aggressive getting him up and walking. It's not the most coordinated thing but he's been up a few times now and while he can't support his own weight he's doing a pretty good job of moving his feet. He knows what he's supposed to be doing, he's just not able to get his feet to move the way he wants. It's pretty cool to see, especially from where he was a few weeks ago. One more gone is his Doc Brown haircut. Bryn Mawr has done a decent job of working with his goatee and keeping his face cleaned up but they aren't allowed to do anything with what's on top. After a few attempts to coordinate with the staff, Colleen and I were able to give him a haircut. I think Colleen wanted to just leave some of the puffy stuff on top and trim the rest and I threatened to go business in the front and party in the back but that just wouldn't be fair either since he can't complain. Oh the gloves. Guess who doesn't like his seatbelt, feeding tube, or anything else attached to him? After he's pissed the nurses off enough, they put giant oven mitts on him so he can't mess with anything. It's a pretty common thing to see around there. He can be sneaky, don't let him talk you into taking them off. He's awake most of the day now but he does still get tired. He's back to being out of bed all day and around 5 they put him back in to rest and get some food and medications. I've been real lucky and he's been awake most of the times I've seen him recently. Visitors have never been a problem, the isolation was more for the other patients, so still feel free to stop by evenings and weekends. And now some Mom stuff. Sean Hansen, the computer teacher at Vanguard, made a video about being a teacher and included some pics of Mom at the end. Thank you Sean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWRhZ5R6mlw Anyone who knew Mom can tell you, she always wanted a party to commemorate her life when she passed. To honor that wish we will be holding a celebration of her life on Sunday November 20th, from 6pm to 9pm at the Wyndham Garden in Exton, PA. We will have two of her favorite things for you to enjoy, coffee and a small selection of desserts. We need to know how many people will be attending the event; so we are asking that those of you who wish to attend please RSVP to us at purpleandblackwednesdays@gmail.com. Please let us know if you will be attending by November 1st. We also request that you send any pictures you may have of her along with any stories/memories that you would be willing to share. Those items can be sent to the email address above also. We ask that these items are sent to us by November 1st also. Paul passed away back in February of this year suddenly at the early age of 48. Paul joined us affiliated with the Modena fire Company in Chester County and has been a member of the Red Knights since 2005. Paul had a passion for motorcycles and loved to ride with family and friends. Paul made several rides out to Sturgis, down to Daytona, and many trips to the Wildwood Bike Weeks. Paul rode a special addition Harley Springer, purple in color with white wall tires. Today's ride was to pay tribute to him and his love for motorcycles, this date was pick as it would have been Paul's 49th Birthday. The ride started at Smaltz's Harley Davidson with a greeting from club President Frank Dowlin (Paul's Brother in-law) followed by an prayer by member Rich Reynolds's. After the prayer the 60 guest went for the 35 mile ride through northern and western Chester County to the Upper Octorara Cemetery in Parkesburg. At Paul's Grave side some very emotional speeches started off by his sister Shannon Dowlin. Several members from the Patriot motorcycle club told some lighting stories from their day's with Paul out at Sturgis, then the Patriot Club presented pictures to the family of a brick that was purchased by them and placed in Main Street of down town Sturgis, they said he loved that place and should always be there in spirit. Following the grave side service guest again went on a ride to the Modena Fire Company where a lunch was provided to all guest. The Proudfoot Family would like to again Thank everyone for their participation and making this a special day. Sat, 15 Oct 2011 21:13:03 GMT http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=72 The Historical Marker Ceremony of the Nation's First Volunteer Fire Company http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=71 On Saturday, October 1, 2011 members of the Red Knights traveled to Philadelphia to attend a historical marker ceremony commemorating the nation's first volunteer fire company formed in 1736. Members met around 8 AM and traveled be a the 30 bypass to Route 202 to Route 76 to Route 676 arriving in Philadelphia around 915. Arriving in Philadelphia club made its way to N. 2nd Ave. and Market Street where the ceremonies were to take place. The club was greeted by a gentleman from the historical marker steering committee who graciously gave them a parking spot right out front of the ceremonies. Another member of the steering committee took us into Grindstone Alley the location of the first volunteer fire company showing us where the marker once stood. In the 1950s the marker was stolen most likely sold for drug money however the marker was replaced and in 2010 was once again removed due to it being unreadable. This marker is being redone and will be replaced in the near future. Ceremony started at 10 AM with opening remarks from Edward Welch a member of the Wyndmoor Hose Company and a part of the Union Fire Company historical marker steering committee. The national anthem was sung by a gentleman named Jeff Chapman of old St. Joseph Church in Philadelphia. An invocation was given by Rev. Timothy Safford of the historical Christ Church of Philadelphia. Remarks were then given by several people including Dr. Benjamin Franklin himself the founder and charter member of the Union Fire Company, also Philadelphia Fire Departments Commissioner Lloyd Ayres. During the ceremonies some of Philadelphia's finest Engine 20 and Ladder 290 came screaming by lights and siren in what seemed to be a fitting moment considering we're there to commemorate the first fire company in the nation, Commissioner Ayers said during his speech that that was not planned they in fact were responding to an emergency incident. The time came to unveil the historical marker that now stood on the sidewalk in front of Grindstone Alley the honors were given to Philadelphia's Fire Department Commissioner Lloyd Ayres and Dr. Benjamin Franklin himself who lifted the blue historical cover off using to pike poles. Following the ceremonies guest were provided with a light lunch prior to concluding the day's events. En route home members traveled I-95 passing Citizens Bank Park were hopefully history will be made later today as the National League East champion Philadelphia Phillies play their first playoff game. And next door sits Lincoln financial Field were hopefully the Eagles will get back on the winning track tomorrow. Members of the Red Knights PA Chapter 2 like to thank Union Fire Company historical marker steering committee for their invitation to this event and allowing us to join you in commemorating the nation's first volunteer fire company. We immediately got in line for the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville Pa. The new Memorial will open September 10th 2011. After the Flight 93 ride, I traveled Rt#31 West out of Somerset to Oakhurst Tea Room for my supper which is right across from the motel, Wren Crest Lodge Motel (you need to hear the story as how I got this "Place"). The Official welcome was at 7:00pm at the Highland Harley-Davidson. Speaking were State Senator Rich Kasunic and Kenny Nacke (brother of Louis J Nacke, a passenger on Flight 93). Donnie Iris performed from 8:00-11:00pm. August 19th Highland Harley-Davidson Somerset Pa. Instructions were given by Eric Sjurseth and a ride prayer by Father Al from Flight 93 Chapel. Sat, 03 Sep 2011 15:50:09 GMT http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=66 Updates on Gary Gordon as of 8-26-11 http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=65 These update come from the family by the carepage web site 8/26/2011 Dad is officially at Bryn Mawr as of lunchtime today. The guys from Minquas Ambulance, who did the transfer (along with Colleen), took good care of him and I'm sure the little bit of fresh air and sunshine was nice. He's going to be going through some evaluations today and tomorrow but he should start the hard work on Monday, Tuesday at the latest. I plan on continuing to update here but if that changes, I'll make sure there's a post that goes out with the new information 8/25/2011 Just a quick one but Dad will be heading to Bryn Mawr Rehab tomorrow. I don't have any details just yet but all of the paperwork has been approved and he'll be on the move. We will be sitting down with people from there today and getting an idea of what's in store. 8/23/2011 Sorry for the length in between updates. Neurologically speaking not a lot has changed. Dad has been doing a little bit more movement wise but it's still not conscious movement. He still doesn't respond to commands and doesn't track when his eyes are open but his muscle responses are stronger and more deliberate. He was never one for much sleep so he must've finally hit his limit as one of his new tricks is that he's started yawning on occasion. They decided that his hip was healing well enough on it's own and it wasn't worth doing any surgery. Where the break actually was, there wasn't a lot they could do and whether it's now or years down the road he's really looking at a hip replacement. They've done a repositioning on both wrists to correct some alignment issues as they heal but it was determined that surgery also wasn't necessary there. He does have a cast on his right foot/ankle but that's to help fix some muscular issues due to him not using his legs. His achilles has tightened up which is causing his foot to point more than it should but it's not a big deal. He's been eating well and all of his organ functions appear to be normal. Most of the superficial wounds have healed or are very close to healed. His color is looking much better than it had been and he really looks good without the tubes sticking out of his face. He could use a trim up and maybe once the cervical collar comes off probably next week we can get him back to looking like his old self even more. There's some talk of him going either to another step down at Christiana or possibly to rehab very soon. There's not much more that they can physically fix at the hospital and he doesn't require the constant monitoring anymore. There is an inpatient neuro therapist visiting him a few times a week and once he gets to rehab they'll do a lot more work on trying to increase brain function. Hopefully I'll have more before the end of the week. Fri, 26 Aug 2011 21:37:58 GMT http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=65 Cal Schoch Sr. Memorial Ride at Pocono Raceway - UPDATED 8-16-11 http://www.redknightsmcpa2.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=64 On Saturday August 13, 2011 several member of the Red Knights attended the Cal Schoch Sr. Memorial Ride at the Pocono Raceway. The day started around 8am at Smaltz Harley Davidson in Chester Spring then from there riders took the 140 mile ride to the Pocono raceway were they got an opportunity to go around the track four times. Riders received their instruction at the start Fast bikes stay right slow bikes stay left NO PACING THE PACE CAR. Around the trap the surface was said to be very ruff but R.P.Scott said he got to 85 and Steve Monahan said he was well over one hundred. A good time was had by all " this is a must due and I can't wait till next" said Quarter Master R. p. Scott. After their four times around the race track member followed the group to Schoch's Harley in Stroudsburg Pa. were food was provided as part of the days registration. Proceeds from the event went to benefit the patients of the Veterans Administration Hospital. Members in attendance were: Ray Wood Matt Norris Walt Mitchell Jr Ken Boyd Cameron Smith R. P. Scott Joe LeBresco Steve Monahan Cameron Smith's Report It was a great day for my first chance to ride the tri-oval Pocono Raceway on my sidecar. Met up with several other RK members including my nephew, Ray Wood, at Smaltz's HD in Chester Springs this past Saturday morning. Although we were originally told that they'd be leaving from Smaltz's at 9:00, a voicemail from Ray told me it had been revised to 8:30, so I left the house a bit after 7, having put a bit of air into the front tire. Topped the tank near Smaltz's and hung out and ate donuts for a while, before the first half of the group left about 8:15 with a plan to ride route 100 and some others before picking up the northeast extension of the turnpike a couple exits up. The rest of us were taking the turnpike the entire route and expected to beat the other group to our destination. When I told the organizer that my sidecar wasn't expected to go more than about 85 miles on a tank, he assigned me two other riders to hang with me when I would have to pull off at the on-road fuel stop above Quakertown. However, the best of plans are laid to waste when others have control. Thus, once on the northeast extension, we enjoyed the half-hour unnecessary delay as we funneled down to a single lane before passing the unoccupied construction zone that wasn't even using the second lane. At least one bike stopped to permit the riders to cool their overheated bike and stop cooking their legs. Turns out my bike gets much better gas mileage on the highway than when I commute into Philly with it and approaching the fuel stop, I let the other two guys know that I still had half a tank of gas so I wasn't stopping. Our group exited at Mahoning Valley and waited for a bit for one rider to do some minor maintenance and then we headed off. While the route was enjoyable, we did go the wrong way at least once and arrived at the raceway very close to the time when we had to be inside. Having been delayed on the road, there was no time to fill up the tanks before we needed to register, pay the $25 and sign the various "I won't sue you" waivers. Behind the registration table, you could hear the sounds of some kind of racing from beyond the berm that was topped with a chainlink fence. I couldn't tell if the sound was from cars or bikes, but regardless, it did pique my interest and the smile factor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocono_Raceway With no time to get gas, we proceeded through the tunnel to the staging area located immediately to the inside of the start/finish line. Took a couple of pictures and hit the bathroom before the sponsors held the ride meeting to tell us we were going to be using the 2.5 mile, three-turn course used by NASCAR. He would be in a pacecar for the 4 laps and would be traveling at 75 mph, but you were not permitted to pass him at any time. "If you want to go 75 mph, start when I do. If you want to go faster, wait some time after I leave. And remember to pass on the right only. Slower riders should stay to the left or down toward the bottom of the track." What he should have said was something like this. "If you are going between 75 and 100, stay on the bottom third. Up to 125 mph, in the middle and only go to the upper side if you're over 125 mph. But more on that later. So there Ray and I are, with our respective rides sitting behind 300 bikes on the track and not sure if I have enough gas to get around the track all four times. And while I had brought a 2-gallon gas can, it sat in the sidecar without time – or a funnel – to get it into my gas tank. I clicked the gas switch from "on" to "res" to ensure I had everything that was available and we set out after the pacecar was past turn 2. And there are still 200 or so other bikes starting out behind us, so I know what they are planning as the vast majority are sport bikes. Getting up to speed on the first straightaway, we hit the 14-degree-banked turn 1 just in time to have most of the bikes in front of us hitting their brakes. I'm actually yelling in my full-faced helmet at these people to get off the brake before you fall down the slope. Some are obviously a bit nervous about this opportunity to see what their bikes can do. Gaining speed along the next straightaway and around the 8-degree-banked turn 2, I'm still seeing brake lights and do my best to begin weaving my way through the traffic as there are way too many bikes on the upper half of the track that are going about 80 to 90 mph. Meanwhile, there are some of us who would prefer to go a bit faster and can't get passed. This is probably the most dangerous time I experienced out on the track as some of the sport bikes were now approaching quickly from the rear. When I say quickly, I remember taking a look in my right mirror and seeing a headlight and before I got a chance to turn my head to the right, they had already blown past. Even more amazing than watching the sport bikes, was seeing the girlfriend pinion hanging on for dear life. I half expected to see them hanging on with their legs blowing along behind in the 140 mph breeze like you'd see in a cartoon. Out of turn 2, I found myself down toward the bottom of the track, going through a bit of dust kicked up by the cycles in front of me. Let me explain that while I had a glove on my right hand, the brace on my left wrist made use of a glove impossible. I soon discovered that at 85 mph, even dust and small bits of tire rubber sting when they hit your knuckles. Ouch! I'll stay away from that area for the remainder of my trip. The 6-degree-banked turn 3 is our last before the long straightaway and that's when everyone decides to jump on the throttle. The gutteral vroom of the large-block cruisers are finally showing life and I'm happy to accelerate up to 90 for the first time ever on this sidecar. Approaching the start/finish, a cruiser in front of me fails to clear the bright orange road cones left over from the earlier car racing and clips one, sending it bouncing along the track and into my path. At this point, I have two choices: I can try to evade it while keeping an eye on the fifty or so bikes around me or I could just drive straight and hope it bounced out of my way. I chose #2 and as luck would have it, the cone passed beyond the sidecar tire. The next time through, I'd be sure to be on the high side of the track. So, I've now safely made it through the first laps and am getting a better feel for the track. Over the course of the next three, I enjoy the feel of the bike and sidecar as I try getting the speed up 10 mph on each successive lap. I had been hoping to see if the bike could handle triple digits, and was not disappointed as I topped out at 110 mph and the bike was still running smoothly and there was throttle remaining. Clearly, the limiting factor on the top speed of the bike was me. I can now confirm that it is, indeed, a racing sidecar. What a blast! Prior to our track time and knowing that we were all low on fuel, RP Scott had gotten directions to a WaWa gas station located along the route the group of bikes would be traveling once everyone was off the track. Basically on fumes, I led Ray off the track and directly out to the main road, I made the left and right turns and was soon at a gas station, realizing it wasn't a WaWa, but figuring the price couldn't be much different at $3.89/gallon. Luckily, RP rode past and waved us to follow him, so we did. Less than a mile down the road, we pulled into a WaWa, where I was amazed to find the price was $0.40 less per gallon! Filled the 3.8 gallon tank with 3.775 gallons having gone 136.1 miles since my last fill up. Far and away the farthest I've ever gone with this rig. I figured it would be a while before the rest of the bikes would be coming through with the police escort for the second destination of the day, but we could hear the police siren as Ray dismounted to hit the ATM inside. Apparently, he couldn't understand us and went inside anyway. As the cop took control of the intersection, the bikes began to pour through. We waited for half a minute and pulled out without Ray, hoping he'd catch up to us before the last of the riders had passed through. Upon his return to the bike, Ray quickly came to the realization that the group had not waited for him, so he bolted out and caught the group before it made the turn. What he didn't realize is that we were waiting behind the cop for Ray to come out the same exit we had, and so he blew past us and I yelled to him. He gave a wave but it may have been just one finger – to tell us what he thought of being left behind. With some space in front of another sidecar, I pulled into traffic and the others followed when spaces became available. Now, what I thought was going to be a short police escort to the Harley Davidson shop sponsoring the event, turned out to be a much longer, almost crescent-shaped ride to their location, through some very pretty countryside. Unfortunately, after an hour and a half of it, I was getting rather tired of riding and was very hungry, having had just a Carnation instant breakfast before 7 a.m. We ultimately arrived at the HD showroom around 3:00 and they had hamburgers, hot dogs, and pulled pork sandwiches. There was also baked beans, potato and pasta salad. They were providing sodas and water for a $1 donation and had beer available, but I wasn't partaking. About 3:45, we decided that we'd had enough and headed for home. One of the guys had determined the best route was to take route 33 South to route 22 and over to the Lancaster interchange of the turnpike. Thus, we followed the crew down 33 and when approaching 22, noticed that they were attempting to go West, when I was sure we were already West of the turnpike. With a wave from RP and the rest as they went West, Ray and I picked up the Eastbound side of 22 and proceeded into New Jersey, when I finally came to the conclusion that I was an idiot and stopped for directions I would actually follow. Back into PA, we stayed on 22 West and finally hit the turnpike, probably a half hour or so after the rest of the group and ultimately made it home to Lafayette Hill shortly after 5 p.m., 10 hours after I'd left. Before stopping at the house, we filled up again having put ridden an identical 136.1 miles and I put over 4 gallons in the tank. Apparently, my understanding of the size of my gas tank was also a bit off. Doh! It's nice to know the bike can get good mileage. Perhaps if I just get it up to speed once it a while, it would blow out all the crap clogging up the engine.
